Performance & Exams

At key stage 4, students are offered a curriculum of robust qualifications in which they achieve well. The curriculum is predominately GCSE and students are fully supported through the options process in selecting courses that are appropriate to their future aspirations.

A small number of alternative qualifications are available to students and we provide a range of courses that will be relevant to our students.

In 2018 the outcomes for students at The Community College were very strong, seeing excellent performances across many subject areas and a rise in all key measures. Notably, in English and mathematics, where the new and more rigorous 9-1 GCSEs were introduced in 2017, performances compared well against national and Shropshire averages.

Over 72% of students achieved five or more passes at GCSE grades 4 and above or equivalent including English and mathematics.

- 73% of students gained a grade 4 or better in English and mathematics above the average for schools in Shropshire.

- 77% attained a grade 4 or better in mathematics and 86% attained a grade 4 or above in English. Both results are above national and Shropshire averages.

- The Attainment 8 score was 5.2 (the average grade across 8 subjects).

- 34% of students achieved the English Baccalaureate (that is pupils achieved at least a 4 grade in English, maths, two sciences a language and either history or geography). As in recent years, this continues to be above the average in Shropshire.

- 47% of all students went on to achieve a grade 7-9 or A/A*, with 5% of students achieving all qualifications at grades 7-9 or A*/A.

We are particularly proud of the progress students make at the Community College across the full range of subjects taken, where in many subject areas results were above the national and Shropshire averages. In the new GCSE subjects, the students performed above local and national averages in almost all areas.

At The Community College the curriculum is constantly under review to ensure that it meets the needs of the students and this is reflected in the changing nature of the curriculum in place at key stage 4. Students leave the school well prepared for the next stage in their lives.
